The Red Master Programme

In Hungary, traditional poultry, including hen and chicken, farming has a long history. The combination of the traditions and the special forms and methods of poultry producing common in Western Europe may be successful in Hungary. It was with regard to this realization that the Hungarian Free-range Poultry Farming Association was established for the setting of the requirements of the free-range system, the enforcement of the requirements, and the safeguarding of breeders’ interests.
The Red Master trademark belongs to the Hungarian Free-range Poultry Farming Association. The right of using the trademark may only be granted to products whose production conforms to the strict standards of the Association. Adherence to the requirements is checked by an independent certification body appointed by the Association.

The Red Master trademark certifies all quality-related characteristics of a product. The life of Red Master fowls may be tracked from the land where plants for their feed grow right to the consumer’s plate. For this purpose, each product’s trademark label includes an individual identification number, which enables the identification of every stage of a fowl’s life.

A Red Master chicken will typically have the following story:
1. Red Master parent hens and roosters are homestead type, grow slowly, and are selected for their top quality and delicious meat.
2. Hatchlings are kept in warm and spacious houses with windows to let in ample sunlight.
3. They only feed on plants, min. 75% of which is corn and wheat.
4. They are also given vegetable proteins (soy and sunflower), vitamins and minerals as supplements. No animal proteins or fats may get into their feed. No growth hormones or antibiotics are allowed to be used!
5. After feathering, not later than at 42 days of age, the chickens are transferred to spacious farms and outdoors. During the daytime they are pastured.
6. Poultry farmers do their best to ensure that the fowls feel good in the farm not only in order to comply with the applicable animal welfare regulations but also to improve the quality of the meat.
7. Compliance with the extremely stringent production standards is checked by an independent certification organization supervised by the state. A certificate issued by the said organization is the precondition for the use of the free-range trademark and the individual identification number.
The above stages and information may be traced back with the help of the serial number found on the labels of Red Master products. This serves as the basis for customers’ confidence in the product.
The Red Master trademark is the highest-level recognition of quality of Hungarian poultry.
